Many of you have read the numerous stories by A A Milne. His best known are of Winnie the Pooh. The fictional character Eeyore is the old stuffed donkey who has the tendency to be very grumpy. His famous quote is “I don’t’ want a perfect life, I want a happy life!” Works for me – how about you? Actually, did you ever know anyone with a “perfect” life? I’m not sure that even exists. It is amazing what others see through different lenses. Happiness is in the grasp of everyone. It is how you look at things. No question some suffer in ways, that we wish God would take away their pain be it physical or mental. However, God has given us the capacity to see happy things if we are open to it. October 6-12 is designated as Mental Health Week.
Eeyore suffered from having a bleak outlook on life and never felt any positive emotions like happiness or excitement. For Those who suffer from mental illness St John Paul II expressed “That it does not mean that someone is spiritually immature or that they are living a punishment for their actions or they do not pray enough.” Unfortunately, there appears to be a stigma associated with mental health care. Nothing is farther from the truth. The last three Popes have spoken openly about the challenges of depression, anxiety, mood disorders and substance use. We need to encourage those who may fear the shame of this to seek treatment. We also know that there are times when therapy, medications and prayer do not seem to be enough. In Romans 12:12 “Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction and persevere in prayer.”
Eeyore is known for his loyalty and continually wins the hearts of his friends. We as family and friends need to continue our hopes and prayers for those who suffer and never forget Eeyore’s comment – “thanks for noticing me!”
