Dear Parish Family, We all have fears – but how do we confront them? Mary Schmich, an award winning Pulitzer Prize writer tells us “Do one thing every day that scares you.” How many times are we afraid and it precludes us from trying? Each time we face our fear, we gain strength and confidence by doing it. We know that if we do not try, we will never accomplish those perceived or real issues. Perhaps start by examining yourself – what is that makes it scary? Then encourage yourself – I think I can – I know I can! Ask the Holy Spirit to help you. And then…meditate on the word of God and truly place your trust in Him. Surgery is always a frightening thing. Even though we are in the hands of a skilled doctor, something could go wrong, and yet we pray for positive results. Medication and I have a very unfavorable relationship. I cannot take pain meds and find that prayer and meditation is the key to both lying on the operating table and dealing with pain afterward. I know God is my strength! Where do you turn for strength? Do you ask Jesus as St Faustina did “Jesus, I trust in you.” When we trust, God gives each of us the fortitude and comfort that we need through a frightening situation. When we turn to family or friends, we are often reassured that things will be ok. God works through them. Ultimately it is God who reveals to us over and over that He is with us. Isaiah 41:10 reveals: “Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be afraid for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you, for I am the Lord your God, I will hold your right hand.” May God give us the courage and trust to challenge our fears. Mary Jo
