Dear Parish Family, As we listened to the lovely music our dedicated musicians provide for us each week, I wondered how long music had been a part of our liturgies. Doing a bit of investigation was eye opening! “Phos Hilarion – “hail gladdening light” was played as an anonymous verse dating from around 290AD. This same hymn (Lumen Hilare) as it is known in Latin, dates back to the 3rd century. The “ Te Deum” is a Christian hymn of praise dating back to the 4th century and is still sung around the world today. It is typically sung before the homily and for special occasions. The meaning translates to “Thee, God, we praise.” The “Song of Songs” is also known as the Song of Solomon, or the canticles represent the union of Christ and love. This is based on the Hebrew Bible found in the first millennium. It is not hard to believe that the most popular hymn of all time, is “Amazing Grace” written by John Newton in 1779. St Augustine tells us “to sing is to pray, twice.” Hymns provide an emotional experience and a divine connection during worship. May our loving God Bless You! Mary Jo
